Choose Less Plastic

By 2050, there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish. So, how can you act to avoid making this a reality?

Growing, packing and delivering your food ourselves puts Riverford in a unique position to use as little packaging as possible.

Riverford veg boxes use 82% less plastic than major supermarkets!*

Here's how:

Boxes, not plastic bags

Instead of plastic bags, our veg is delivered in recycled cardboard boxes. This allows us to pack lots of veg loose - and we’ll collect the box from your doorstep to use again.

We reuse each box up to 10 times!

Helping you and the planet

Every local council accepts different materials for recycling. Can’t recycle our packaging at home? Leave it out alongside your box, and we’ll collect it to recycle back at the farm.

Nature provides its own packaging

We don’t use any extra packaging unless it’s necessary to prevent food waste. Our customers don’t mind trimming off a few tatty outer leaves to avoid using a bag.

This has saved 1.5 tonnes of plastic every year

Innovative plastic alternatives

Where packaging is absolutely necessary, we seek the most sustainable solutions. Our compostable pulp punnets took years to develop, but they do a great job of protecting our tomatoes and soft fruit.

Compostable beech netting

We were the first UK company to discover compostable beech netting. A by-product from sustainable forestry, the wood would otherwise go to waste. Just stick it on your compost heap or in your council compost bin.

182km of plastic net saved!

Small changes add up

Independent researchers Savanta run a study comparing our plastic usage with organic produce from the 7 leading UK supermarkets. The results?
